Rubén stood near the driveway with an arrogant smirk, tossing a shiny key fob into the air and catching it. He motioned toward the sleek black luxury vehicle he had parked in front of the modest home. For years, Rubén had been nothing more than an absent memory, having abandoned Mía and her mother when Mía was only two years old. While Mía grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Guadalajara, her biological father built a wealthy life elsewhere, ignoring his parental responsibilities while Clara worked long factory shifts. Now, on her sixteenth birthday, he had returned, expecting to buy Mía’s affection with a grand gesture and humiliate Andrés in the process.

“I brought you a brand-new vehicle, Mía,” Rubén announced loudly, casting a disdainful glance at Andrés’s grease-stained clothes. “A real parent provides luxury, not excuses. I signed the purchase papers this morning and even secured an affordable car insurance policy to cover it completely. You don’t have to live like this anymore.”

Clara stepped forward, her voice trembling with anger. “You have no right to come here after fourteen years of silence, Rubén! You never paid child support, you never helped when she was sick, and now you show up with a car to make yourself feel less guilty?”
