The Silent Gift

 

Mía looked at the shiny luxury car, then at the brass key held tightly in Andrés’s calloused, scraped hand. The memory of Andrés staying up late fixing leaks, bringing her medicine when she had dengue fever, and attending every single school meeting washed over her. Andrés had spent eleven agonizing weeks sneaking out at night after grueling shifts at his mechanics job, coming home exhausted with injured knuckles and red eyes, just to build something with his own hands.

“Keep your key, Rubén,” Mía said, her voice steady and clear. “You weren’t here when I needed a father. Buying a car today doesn’t change fourteen years of absence.”

Rubén’s face flushed with irritation. “You’re making a huge mistake, girl. That man working as a neighborhood mechanic will never give you a real future.”

Without saying another word, Mía turned her back on her biological father and walked toward the tin shed where Andrés stood. Andrés looked at her with soft, tear-filled eyes, his chest rising and falling heavily.
