After 42 years of marriage, my husband asked me for a divorce and admitted that he had been cheating on me. I thought the betrayal was already more than I could bear.
I had no idea that an alert from his smartwatch would reveal something far worse was behind everything.
For 42 years, Ed and I had built a life together. We had 4 children and 6 grandchildren, and from the outside, it felt as though we were living our best years together.
We had spent decades sharing ordinary routines, family celebrations, difficult moments, and the countless little experiences that slowly become a life. After so many years, I thought I knew my husband better than anyone.
Then Ed’s doctor told him that he urgently needed to start exercising, even if he could only manage a little at first, because of his health condition.
I took the advice seriously. I wanted Ed to stay healthy, so I bought him a smartwatch and connected its health alerts to my phone. That way, I could keep an eye on his readings and know if something seemed wrong.
At the time, it felt like a simple way of looking out for the man I loved.
Ed joined a gym, and for a while, everything seemed great.
He had a new routine. He was exercising, paying more attention to his health, and seemed to have something positive to focus on. I was relieved and hoped this new chapter would be good for both of us.
But lately, Ed had changed.
At first, I tried not to make too much of it. After 42 years together, you learn that people have difficult days. I told myself that perhaps he was stressed or worried about his health.
But his behavior became harder to ignore.
He became distant and withdrawn.
He talked less. He seemed distracted even when we were together. There was a coldness between us that I could not explain, and the more I tried to understand what was happening, the more he seemed to pull away.
I never imagined that the answer would be something that could tear apart our entire marriage.
Then one day, Ed finally sat me down.
His expression told me that something was seriously wrong, but I was completely unprepared for what he was about to say.
He looked at me and said:
« I’m sorry, but I’ve fallen in love with another woman. I’ve been with her for a long time. »
Then he handed me divorce papers.
For a moment, I could barely understand what I was looking at.
After 42 years of marriage, after raising 4 children and becoming grandparents to 6 grandchildren, my husband was telling me that he had been in love with another woman for a long time.
I broke down crying.
I demanded to know who she was. I needed to know how long this had been happening and how someone I had shared my entire adult life with could have hidden something so enormous from me.
Ed finally muttered that she was his trainer.
