“You signed them!”
“I signed a petition for temporary guardianship in the event Olivia died during surgery.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He looked at me then, and the fear in his face was real.
“Liv, the doctor said there was a risk of hemorrhage. Mom came to me last night. She said the hospital needed emergency guardianship preferences in writing in case neither of us could make decisions.”
Margaret shook her head violently.
“That is not what happened.”
Ethan crossed the room and snatched the papers from the tray.
He flipped through the pages.
The color drained from his face.
“This isn’t what I signed.”
“Your signature is there,” I said.
“It was a single-page hospital form. Blank spaces for guardian names. Mom said she’d have Karen listed as backup because she lives nearby.”
My voice became dangerously quiet.
