Part Two of the Story… 👇
The panic in Valerie’s voice vibrated through the speaker, instantly chasing away any remnant of sleep. I slipped out of bed as quietly as possible, tip-toeing toward the hallway so Owen wouldn’t wake up. My mind raced with terrifying possibilities as I pressed the phone tightly against my ear.
I asked her what was wrong, trying to keep my voice steady despite the fear clutching at my throat. She took a ragged breath and explained that Russell was not the charming retiree he claimed to be. Over the last two days, his warm demeanor had completely vanished, replaced by an unsettling paranoia and controlling behavior. 🚪
He had taken her car keys, hidden her wallet, and restricted her access to the internet under the guise of living an isolated lifestyle. She had managed to sneak her phone into the bathroom only because he had finally fallen asleep after a heated argument. Valerie was terrified, stranded in a secluded coastal cabin miles away from any major town.
I remembered her earlier confidence during our beach trip and realized how vulnerable she truly was in this unknown place. She pleaded with me not to tell Owen because she knew his hot temper would cause him to rush down there unprepared. She feared a violent confrontation between the two men before anyone could intervene safely.
