If you've ever picked up a prescription from a pharmacy, you've probably noticed the same familiar sight: small orange or amber-colored plastic bottles filled with medication.

The color has become so closely associated with medicine that it can seem like nothing more than a tradition. But there is actually a practical reason these containers are commonly tinted.

The answer has to do with protecting medications from light.

Why Are Prescription Bottles Usually Amber or Orange?

Many medications can be affected by prolonged exposure to light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Light can cause certain drug compounds to break down or undergo chemical changes. Depending on the medication, this may affect its stability, appearance, or effectiveness.

Amber-colored plastic helps reduce the amount of light reaching the medication inside the container.

So that familiar orange-brown bottle isn't simply a design choice. Its color serves a protective purpose.

What Does the Amber Color Do?

Amber plastic acts somewhat like a filter.

It allows some visible light to pass through while reducing the transmission of certain wavelengths, including much of the ultraviolet light that can be damaging to light-sensitive substances.

This is especially useful because pharmacies need containers that are:

  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to handle
  • Resistant to breakage
  • Suitable for protecting certain medications from light

Amber plastic offers a practical combination of these characteristics.

Why Not Make Every Pill Bottle Completely Opaque?

It might seem as though the best solution would be to use completely dark containers.

But there are advantages to being able to see the medication and its contents.

Pharmacists, patients, and caregivers can more easily inspect the container and its contents when the bottle isn't completely opaque. The amber color provides a compromise between visibility and light protection.

However, the amount of protection needed depends on the particular medication.

Not Every Medication Needs the Same Protection

An important detail is that not all medications are equally sensitive to light.

Some drugs are relatively stable under ordinary lighting conditions, while others require additional protection.

If a medication is especially light-sensitive, its packaging may be different. It might come in:

  • An opaque container
  • A foil package
  • A blister pack
  • A dark glass bottle
  • Specialized protective packaging

That's why you shouldn't assume that every medication belongs in the same type of container.
