THE NIGHT THEY LOST EVERYTHING

Mariana nodded.

At least she did not lie.

“I’m sorry.”

Valeria felt no satisfaction hearing it.

“Were you sorry while your father burned me?”

Mariana began crying.

“No.”

“Were you sorry while you kept recording?”

“No.”

“Were you sorry when you planned to use that recording against me?”

Mariana covered her mouth.

“No.”

Valeria pushed the phone back toward her.

“Then don’t apologize because consequences finally reached you.”

Mariana left the phone.

It became evidence.

Her cooperation later mattered.

But it did not erase what she had done.

Months passed.

Valeria’s pregnancy advanced.

So did the investigations.

Ernesto eventually faced prosecution connected to the assault and financial fraud allegations.

Nicolás faced his own legal consequences for restraining Valeria and for his role in the unauthorized transfers and forged financial documents.

Mariana’s cooperation reduced her exposure, but she was forced to repay money she had received through the shell company tied to her.

Teresa was not charged with the physical assault, but her messages and participation destroyed the image of the innocent mother who had merely been “sitting at dinner.”

And the penthouse?

They were all gone from it within days.

Not because Valeria dragged their belongings into the hallway.

Not because she screamed.

Not because she retaliated.

She did it through attorneys, building security and documented legal procedures.

Nicolás returned once under supervision to collect his personal possessions.

Valeria was not there.

He left his key on the marble island where she had backed away from his father that New Year’s Eve.

Four months later, Valeria went into labor.

Lucía was at the hospital.

So was Valeria’s older cousin Elena, who flew in from Guadalajara the moment she received the call.

Nicolás was notified through the appropriate legal channel.
