THE NIGHT THEY LOST EVERYTHING

Valeria stared at her.

“How?”

“Forged authorization.”

“How much?”

“Another 7.4 million pesos.”

Valeria laughed once.

A cold, exhausted sound.

“They really thought I would never look.”

Lucía shook her head.

“No. They thought you would look eventually.”

“Then why risk it?”

“Because they believed the baby would keep you from leaving.”

That was the real scheme.

Not one brilliant criminal plan.

Something more ordinary.

More arrogant.

For years, Nicolás’s family had watched Valeria pay.

Every time they demanded more, she gave more.

Every time they crossed a boundary, Nicolás called it family loyalty.

Then she became pregnant.

And they convinced themselves she was trapped.

They believed motherhood would make her easier to control.

They were wrong.

Valeria filed for divorce.

She also formally revoked every authorization Nicolás possessed.

His access to accounts disappeared.

His car payments stopped.

So did the rent payments for Mariana’s apartment.

So did Teresa’s supplemental household allowance.

So did the money Ernesto had treated like his private emergency fund.

The response was immediate.

Teresa called from another number.

“Valeria, regardless of what happened between you and Nicolás, you cannot punish the entire family.”

Valeria almost hung up.

Instead she asked:

“What am I punishing you with?”

Silence.

“Excuse me?”

“Your home is paid for. You have food. You have your own money. What exactly am I doing to you?”

“You canceled things we depend on.”

“Things I paid for.”

“We’re your family.”

Valeria looked down at her stomach.

“No. You taught me that I wasn’t.”

Then she ended the call.

Mariana lasted six days before asking to speak privately.
