“Mom, these are the fancy dishes.”
I looked at the dishes I was holding in my hands.
“Try.”
“We are eating lasagna.”
“I know, darling.”
Marissa was watching me from the kitchen doorway.
“Mari, your mother has been rearranging those dishes for 20 minutes,” Henry said through my phone, which was on speakerphone. “Don’t interfere with the process.”
I cast a furious glance at the screen.
“You were meant to be here.”
“I know.”

His business trip had lasted a day longer than expected, which meant that the man my daughter intended to marry would be having dinner with us for the first time while Henry was four hours away. Family
