I Adopted a 16-Year-Old Girl to Fulfill My Late Husband’s Wish – Days Later, She Whispered, ‘It’s Time You Learned Who Your Husband Really Was’

“He told me not before the farewell service. Not weeks later. Exactly one day afterward.”
She stepped inside and closed the door.
The box was dark wood, roughly the size of a large book.
“Did Nolan give you that?”
“The week I moved in.”
“What is inside?”
“I don’t know everything.”
“You never opened it?”
“He made me promise that we would open it together.”
She sat on the edge of the bed.
Her fingers trembled around the box.
“I have spent my whole life being told to wait,” she said. “I cannot wait another day.”
“Sadie, my husband is gone. I don’t know how much more I can absorb tonight.”
Her eyes filled.
“You need to know who he was.”
A chill passed through me.
“Was he your father?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly to misunderstand.
I stared at her.
“Then who was he?”
She placed the box between us.
“Open it.”
Inside was a bundle of letters tied with a faded green ribbon.
Beneath them lay photographs curled with age.
The top picture showed Nolan’s father, Everett Bellrose.
He had been gone for years.
Beside him stood a young woman I had never seen.
She had one arm folded protectively across her body while Everett looked toward the camera.
On the back, in his handwriting, was a date.
Below it were two words:
Forgive me.
“Who is she?”
Sadie lowered her head.
“My mother.”
I looked at the photograph again.
Everett appeared to be in his late forties.
The woman beside him was much younger.
“Tell me plainly.”
Sadie clasped her hands together.
“Nolan was not my father.”
“You already said that.”
“He was my brother.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“Your brother?”
“My half-brother.”
She pointed to Everett.
“His father was also mine.”
I looked from the photograph to Sadie’s face.
The gray eyes.
The narrow chin.
The resemblance I had attributed to Nolan.
It came from the same man.
“What happened?”
Sadie took a shaking breath.
“My mother’s name was Liora Dane. She worked as an assistant at Everett’s property office in the fictional district of Wrenfall Reach.”
“How old was she?”
“Twenty-three when their relationship began.”
“Was Everett still married?”
“Yes.”
My stomach turned.
“Nolan’s mother?”
“She never knew.”
“Did Nolan know?”
Sadie nodded.
“For how long?”
