Think you have a sharp eye?
Then take a close look at this vintage illustration.
At first glance, there seems to be nothing unusual about it.
You see a peaceful natural landscape with large rocks in the foreground, dry ground, trees, branches, and a body of water in the background.
There is even a canoe carrying two people across the water.
Everything looks perfectly ordinary.
But hidden inside this simple scene is another image.
And the challenge is:
Can you spot the man wearing a hat?
Don’t rush to search for a tiny person hiding behind a tree.
That’s not how this puzzle works.
The man is hidden within the larger shapes of the landscape itself.
Look at the picture again.
Try to forget what you think you’re seeing.
The rocks aren’t necessarily just rocks.
The shadows aren’t necessarily just shadows.
The spaces between the different shapes may be creating something much larger.
This type of optical illusion works by playing with something called figure-ground perception.
Normally, your brain quickly decides what is the object and what is the background.
A rock is a rock.
Water is water.
A tree is a tree.
Once your brain makes those decisions, it doesn’t usually question them.
That’s exactly what makes this puzzle so tricky.
The hidden man’s face is formed by the contours, shadows, and negative spaces within the landscape.
You’re not looking for a tiny drawing of a man.
You’re looking for a large face and hat hidden inside the overall composition.
So try changing the way you look at the picture.
Instead of examining every small line, step back slightly from the screen.
Relax your eyes.
Look at the bigger shapes.
Now focus on the foreground rocks.
Look at the large formation on the left.
Then move your attention toward the rocks in the center.
Pay attention to the spaces between them.
Can those shapes begin to resemble a face?
Look for the basic features.
A forehead.
A brow.
A nose.
A chin.
