Why Hotel Beds Have That Strange Runner at the Foot

Blue.

Gold.

Brown.

Sometimes it has a fancy pattern.

Most people assume it’s simply there to make the bed look nicer.

But that little piece of fabric actually has a practical purpose.

It’s called a bed runner or bed scarf.

And once you know why hotels use it, you’ll probably notice it every time you check in.

It Creates a “Safe Zone” for Your Stuff

Think about what happens when you arrive after a long trip.

You put your suitcase down.

You have a jacket.

Maybe a handbag or backpack.

You sit on the edge of the bed while taking off your shoes.

And sometimes, without thinking, you put something on the bed.

That’s exactly where the runner can help.

The strip creates a designated area at the foot of the bed for things that shouldn’t necessarily go directly onto the fresh white bedding.

It can help protect the main bedding from dirt, dust, crumbs, minor spills, and everyday contact.

It Can Protect the Bedding From Shoes and Luggage

Here’s one of the most obvious reasons.

After walking through airports, streets, restaurants and other public places, the bottoms of your shoes aren’t exactly clean.

And suitcases?

They’ve probably been rolling across floors, sidewalks and other surfaces.

So if someone places a bag or shoes near the bottom of the bed, the runner provides a layer between those items and the main bedding.

It’s much easier to clean or replace a small runner than deal with a stained duvet or larger piece of bedding.

It’s Also Useful for Snacks and Drinks

Ever eaten breakfast while sitting on a hotel bed?

You’re not alone.

A coffee cup.

A sandwich.

A plate.
