What is the loquat?

Many people describe the flavor of loquat as a mixture that is difficult to explain. Some say it is a bit reminiscent of mango, others feel a resemblance to pear or even melon. The truth is that it has its own identity. It is one of those fruits that, once you try it very ripe, is difficult to forget. Of course, there is an important detail: if it is not on point, it may feel a little rough or less pleasant to the palate.
Something curious about the loquat is that it has not always had the recognition it deserves. For years it was seen more as a backyard or rural fruit, especially in tropical countries. It was common to find trees loaded with fruit in country houses, family yards or large plots of land, where children climbed to pick some fruits directly from the tree. But with the passage of time, its popularity has grown, and more and more people are looking for it for its flavor and nutritional properties.

And speaking of nutrition, that’s where the loquat starts to attract even more attention. Although many people consume it simply because it tastes good, it turns out that this fruit contains interesting nutrients for the body. It is rich in fiber, which can help maintain more balanced digestion and promote a feeling of satiety. In addition, it contains important vitamins and minerals that participate in different functions of the body.
Among the vitamins usually found in loquat is vitamin C, known for its role in the immune system. It can also provide vitamin A, related to visual health and skin care. Added to this is the presence of antioxidants, compounds that help combat cellular damage caused by free radicals.

It is not uncommon to hear older people talk about loquat as a fruit “good for health”. In many homes it has been used traditionally as part of home remedies or simply as a food that was considered beneficial for general well-being. Of course, like any food, it is not a magic solution nor does it replace medical treatments, but it can be part of a varied and balanced diet.
Another interesting point about the loquat is that it is usually a fairly hydrating fruit. Thanks to its water content, it can be refreshing, especially on days of intense heat, something highly valued in tropical countries where temperatures tend to be high much of the year. Eating a cold loquat can become quite a pleasant experience.
