The smaller girl ran toward the screen door and pressed her hand to the mesh.

I had seen that birthmark on an ultrasound and cried over how much I already loved a child I had not met.
The front door opened.
Rain blew across the porch.
Helen grabbed the frame and tried to speak.
Before she could, the older girl appeared behind her clutching a faded yellow blanket with little stitched ducks along the edge.
I had made two blankets exactly like that during my pregnancy.
‘Mama Helen,’ the girl asked softly, looking from me to Ethan, ‘why does she look like us?’
Nobody moved.
Then Margaret said, in a voice flat and cold, ‘Because seven years ago, I made a choice for this family.’
That was the moment the lie cracked all the way open.
Ruiz read the emergency order.
Helen started sobbing.
Margaret tried to stop him, tried to say the girls were legally adopted, that I was unstable, that Ethan and I had been unfit from the beginning.
But she was talking too fast now.

Helen was the one who finally broke.
She said that seven years earlier, three months after her adult daughter Rebecca died in a car accident, she had been barely functioning.
Margaret called her from Riverside in the middle of the night and said there was a private family arrangement.
She told Helen that I had hemorrhaged badly, that I was emotionally unstable, that I did not want the babies, and that Ethan had agreed it would be best for the twins to stay within the family until everything was sorted out.
Helen drove to the hospital half-mad with grief and left with two babies in borrowed car seats.
