The Inside Asset

The laughter of twelve teenage boys and girls echoed across the wildflower fields, a bright, beautiful sound that filled the empty spaces of the estate with life.

It was the first official week of the Autumn Refuge Program. The old barn had been completely converted into a state-of-the-art learning lab and kitchen, where the foster kids could learn culinary arts and sustainable farming.

My suitcase sat by the front door of the main house. My flight to Zurich was rescheduled for tomorrow morning, and this time, there were no emergency calls waiting to pull me out of line.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was a brief update from Arthur: Marcus Davis pleaded guilty this morning. Tessa’s trial is set for next month, and Brandon’s sentencing has been finalized. He will serve four years at Oxford Federal Correctional. He asked if you would visit him.

I stared at the screen for a long moment.

I didn’t hate my brother. But I had finally learned the difference between helping someone stand and carrying them while they kicked you.

I set the phone down, walked out onto the porch, and watched one of the young girls from the city carefully pick a ripe Honeycrisp apple from the lowest branch of the grandmother’s tree, her face lighting up with a proud, victorious smile.

My brother had tried to sell this place for half its value to fund a lie. But as I watched the kids running through the golden fields, I knew that the true value of my home could never be measured in millions.

It was measured in the lives we rebuilt here, beam by beam.
