The colonel’s last order: what David had hidden

He had answered a question that no one had asked.

No one had accused him of doing anything to David.

However, his initial defense had been this:

I didn’t do anything.

Harris looked me in the eyes.

He knew.

I knew.

Julian knew that we knew.

Then, outside, a loud alarm sounded.

Each soldier reacted immediately.

The captain placed two fingers on his earpiece.

« Movement on the rear perimeter. »

Harris’s face hardened.

« With what? »

» Unknown. «

He turned towards me.

« Colonel, we’re leaving now. »

My mother gasped.

« What’s going on? »

I didn’t reply.

The captain took me by the arm and led me towards the side entrance.

Then a soldier ran inside.

« General, a vehicle is approaching from the east. No license plates. »

Harris swore under his breath.

Julian suddenly ran away.

He bumped his shoulder into the soldier standing near him and ran towards the garage.

Harper shouted his name.

Two soldiers subdued him before he could reach the Audi.

The keys slipped on the concrete.

« Get off me! » Julian shouted.

The captain handcuffed his wrists. Something small fell from his jacket.

A black device.

No bigger than a car remote control.

Harris stared at him.

« Don’t touch that. »

Everyone froze.

A few seconds later, a specialist entered from the second vehicle.

He crouched down near the object.

The expression on his face changed.

« Signal transmitter. »

I felt a knot in my stomach.

Harris looked at Julian.

« What for? »

Julian said nothing.

The technician examined it.

« Short-range encrypted transmitter. »

The general’s gaze turned towards the walkway.

» Scope ? «

The technician looked somber.

« This means that someone could have followed this position. »

Harper staggered backwards.

» No. «

Julian closed his eyes.

And suddenly, the last pieces began to fit together.

The military vehicles posed no threat to my house.

The danger was already there.

Eating my food.

Sleeping under David’s roof.

Claiming David’s room.

Securing the Audi in David’s garage.

I looked at my brother-in-law.

« How long has it been? »

He stared at the ground.

I approached.

« How long have you been watching us? »

Harper whispered, « Evelyn, stop. »

I ignored her.

« Was David watching you? »

Julian pursed his lips.

Harris signaled to the soldiers.

They got Julian back on his feet.

Then Julian looked at me.

There was no longer any charm in his expression.

No smiles.

Just something cold.

« Do you think David was watching me? »

There was almost amusement in his voice.

I watched it.

« What does that mean? »

He leaned forward as far as the soldiers allowed him to.

« You still don’t understand what your husband was doing. »

Harris intervened.

« That’s enough. »

Julian smiled.

It was the first expression on his face that truly frightened me.

« Ask him where David spent the three weeks before his death. »

I watched Harris.

The general’s expression has changed.

With difficulty.

But I saw her.

« What is he talking about? »

« Colonel… »

« Where was David? »

« This is not the place. »

I approached him.

« You told me he died during a mission. »

» No. «

» Or ? «

Harris remained silent.

I felt the anger rising within me again.

« Where was my husband during those three weeks? »

Then a voice was heard on the captain’s radio.

« Perimeter secured. Arrival of command aircraft confirmed. »

Harris exhaled slowly.

« We have to leave. »

I didn’t move.

« Answer me. »

He looked at my family.

Then Julian.

Finally, he said softly:

« Your husband spent the last three weeks of his life in the United States. »

The room disappeared from my sight.

» What ? «

« He came home earlier. »

I could barely hear him.

« Was David here? »

» No. «

« How far away? »

Harris hesitated.

This hesitation hurt more than anything else.

« How far away? »

« Thirty kilometers away. »

My knees almost gave way.

Three weeks.

David was thirty kilometers away.

While I was sleeping alone.

While I was sending her goodnight messages.

While I was leaving her voicemails saying that the baby had moved for the first time.

He was here.

Alive.

Close enough to go home.

» For what ? «

My voice broke.

Harris lowered his eyes.

« He thought that going home would put you in danger. »

I touched my stomach.

« He never told me. »

« He couldn’t. »

I laughed once, but it wasn’t humorous.

« Everyone keeps saying it. »

Then the captain approached.

« Madam, the plane takes off in twelve minutes. »

Harris handed me another envelope.

« This comes directly from David. »

My hands were trembling when I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Evelyn,

If you are reading this, it means I haven’t come home.

I stopped breathing.

The room fell silent.

I continued reading.

Don’t blame yourself for anything that happens.

Don’t believe the version of my death that was first given to you.

And, most importantly, let’s protect our child.

I suddenly looked up.

Harris said nothing.

I went back to the letter.

There’s a reason why I’ve stayed away these past few weeks.

There is a reason why the extraction order takes effect after my burial.

And there’s someone close to your family who knows more than they should.

My gaze turned towards Julian.

His face was completely white.

The last sentence was underlined twice.

But Evelyn, if anyone tells you I died before November 4th, they’re lying to you.

My heart stopped.

Military documents from the previous day indicated October 29th as the official date of David’s death.

I watched Harris.

November 4th.

Six days later.

« What does that mean? »

Harris did not respond.

I approached him.

« What happened on November 4th? »

Before he could speak, the captain’s radio crackled again.

This time, the voice on the other end of the line seemed urgent.

« General, the command aircraft has landed. »

Harris looked towards the window.

I followed his gaze.

Behind the row of armored vehicles, a large military helicopter could be seen descending into an open field behind the property.

Snow and dead leaves swirled violently beneath the rotors.

My mother covered her mouth.

Harper remained motionless near Julian.

My father looked older than he had an hour earlier.

The helicopter landed.

The side door opened.

Two soldiers jumped out.

Then a third figure appeared.

She was not wearing a formal uniform.

No medals.

Just a combat outfit and a closed dark jacket.

She walked slowly across the frozen grass.

My heart started beating fast.

Something about his attitude.

The angle of his shoulders.

The way she stopped before starting again.

Impossible.

My hand tightened on David’s letter.

Harris turned towards me.

For the first time that morning, the general seemed nervous.

« Colonel Bennett, » he said softly, « there remains a part of your husband’s last order that you must understand. »

The figure outside headed towards the house.

And from twenty meters away, through the frost and swirling leaves, I saw her raise her head.

Suddenly, my wedding ring felt incredibly heavy.

Because the person approaching walked exactly like David.
