PART 4: The Debt Settled
Dominic didn’t open the door. He peered through the security peephole, his brow furrowing. He turned to Salvatore and gave a quick, sharp sign: “The owner of the restaurant. And the manager.”
Salvatore didn’t look bothered. He gave Dominic a slight nod.
The lock clicked, and the door opened to reveal the restaurant’s owner, Mr. Sterling, looking utterly terrified, with a pale-faced Brett hovering behind him.
“Mr. Marquetti,” Sterling stammered, bowing slightly as he stepped into the room. “I am deeply, deeply sorry for any disrespect. I was just informed that one of our… our lower-tier staff members has been bothering you. Brett here told me she refused to take your order properly and has been acting inappropriately.”
Brett nodded eagerly, his eyes filled with a desperate, malicious hope. “Yes, sir. Tessa has a history of insubordination. I can have her escorted from the premises immediately and replaced with our head captain.”
Salvatore didn’t stand up. He didn’t even look at Brett. He simply raised his hand, pointing a single, commanding finger at the chair beside him where I sat.

“And Mr. Sterling,” Salvatore continued, his eyes finally shifting to the restaurant owner, cold as winter ice. “Your lease is up for renewal next month. It will not be renewed. I do not do business with men who allow their managers to humiliate their hardest workers for amusement.”
“Mr. Marquetti, please!” Sterling gasped, his face turning entirely white. “We can fix this! Brett is fired! Right now! Brett, pack your things and get out!”
“I don’t care about Brett,” Salvatore said flatly, returning to sign language as he looked back at me. “But I care about my wife’s peace of mind.”
I froze. My hands hovered in the air. “Your… your what?” I signed, my cheeks burning.
Salvatore smiled, a genuine, warm expression that completely transformed his rugged face.
“In our world, Tessa, a contract is a contract,” he signed. “I need a partner who can navigate both the hearing world and mine. Someone who understands the value of silence, loyalty, and family. If you agree to manage the St. Jude’s foundation, your brother’s surgery is scheduled for Monday morning. All expenses paid.”
As Mr. Sterling frantically ushered a trembling, ruined Brett out of the private dining room, I looked at the man who had turned my coworkers’ cruelest joke into the day my family was saved…
