PART 2: The Unbroken Whisper

PART 5: The Masterpiece

The laboratory on the top floor of the Moretti estate was immaculate. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the rows of crystal vials, copper alembics, and the leather-bound notebooks that had once sat on my dusty rental shelf.

I stood by the marble counter, carefully measuring three drops of blue chamomile extract into a base of sandalwood and amber.

My sister, Sasha, sat at the small table near the window, her hair neatly braided with silk ribbons, happily working on her homework. She no longer had to pretend to sleep to skip dinner. Her cheeks were rosy, her laughter frequent, and her future completely secured.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Silvio walked in, having discarded his jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He crossed the room with that same effortless, predatory grace, stopping right behind me. His hands found my waist, pulling me back against his chest.

“Is it finished?” he murmured, kissing the crook of my neck.

“It is,” I whispered, holding up the small, crystal vial. “It’s my mother’s final formula. She called it The Whisper.”

Silvio took the vial from my hand, uncorking it and inhaling the scent. A look of deep, quiet satisfaction settled over his rugged features.

“It’s perfect,” he said. “Just like the woman who made it.”

He turned me around in his arms, his grey eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that still made my heart skip a beat.

“Six months ago, a very brave girl told me I was her dream in a stuck elevator,” Silvio said, his thumb gently tracing my jawline.

I smiled, leaning into his touch. “And what does the mafia boss say to that now?”

Silvio leaned down, his lips brushing against mine in a sweet, slow promise.

“He says the dream is finally awake. And he’s never letting her go.”
