Part 1: Thanksgiving at the Vale House

A message from my mother.

We’re still your family.

I stared until the screen dimmed.

Then I deleted it.

Family is not a word people get to use after turning you into a wallet, a secret, and a shadow.

Family is not blood demanding payment.

Family is not love arriving only after the money stops.

I put my phone away and watched a Navy ship move slowly across the gray water.

For the first time in my life, I did not wonder whether my mother would ever be proud of me.

I was proud of myself.

And that was enough.
