5. Certain Medications
Some medications can increase saliva production or make swallowing less frequent during sleep.
Examples include certain medications used for:
- Mental health conditions
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Some antibiotics and other prescription drugs
If drooling began after starting a new medication, consult your healthcare provider before making any changes.
6. Neurological Conditions
Persistent or severe drooling can sometimes occur in people with neurological disorders that affect muscle control or swallowing, such as:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Stroke
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Cerebral palsy
However, drooling alone does not mean someone has one of these conditions. It is usually accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
