The Lymphatic System Explained
Our lymphatic system is part of your immunity. Its main function is to transport the lymph back into the blood vessels.
Lymph is a surplus fluid produced in the tissues of the body after blood transport. A healthy lymphatic system aids the production of white blood cells which kill pathogens, keeps the body’s fluid levels optimal by gathering fluid drains, absorbs fat in the digestive tract and redirects it into the blood, and eliminates abnormal cells and waste from the lymph.
The lymphatic system has various parts, including the lymph, lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels and ducts, the spleen, the tonsils, the thymus, the adenoids, the bone marrow, the appendix, and the small intestine lymphatic tissues.
What Are the Consequences of a Clogged Lymphatic System?
When the lymphatic system is clogged, it has a negative effect on the blood vessels, tissues, and organs that make up the whole system.
A swollen and clogged lymphatic system contributes to lymphedema and enlarged lymph nodes and may even increase the risk of lymphatic cancer.
The risk of lymphatic system malfunction increases with poor physical activity and insufficient nutrients. A diet full of processed foods also contributes to a higher risk of clogged glands and vessels.
A long list of health problems is also said to be a result of lymphatic problems, including digestive disorders, arthritis, recurring headaches, sinus infections, tiredness, skin issues, weight gain, etc.
How to Detoxify the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system doesn’t have a pumping system. So, it has to rely on the movements of the body, muscle action, and blood activity to function optimally.
For a better lymphatic health, follow these tips:
- Work out on a regular basis
- Don’t forget to drink water
- Try breathing exercises
- Practice hot and cold showers to expand the blood vessels
- Try dry brushing
- Reduce your consumption of artificial sweeteners and processed foods
- Consume more healthy and whole foods, including nuts, leafy greens, low-sugar foods, herbal teas, etc
- Try lymphatic drainage massage with prior consultation with a doctor
