Carl had commanded the rescue groups. He had rested inside my cooking area sipping warm brews. He had stated to the kids, “We are refusing to surrender.”
Gwen noted, “He warned me that if I returned home, the kids would suffer the consequences. I assumed it was merely empty intimidation. Later the following dawn, I discovered a message inside the church alongside an image of Leon stepping out of your vehicle near his campus.”
I mentioned, “He assigned a person to monitor the property.”
“He possessed way beyond that,” she replied. “An individual inside the local department slipped him details. A social worker. Class timetables. Locations. Absolutely whatever he desired.”
“You regardless managed to travel a greater distance,” I pointed out. “You possessed the option to phone the regional cops. A journalist. Myself.”
“I attempted it a single time.”
“I sent duplicates of a pair of messages and a portion of your spouse’s documents to the regional headquarters. A trio of days following that, I arrived back at this spot and discovered the packet beneath a bench. Unsealed. Contained within was a fresh picture of Leon strolling back to the house.”
“Following that event,” she noted, “I trusted his threats.”
I continued to bite back, “That justifies a couple of weeks. A couple of months. Not a dozen years.”
“The church was not the place I resided during that entire period. It was the location I returned to. Your spouse had highlighted it inside his logs as the single spot no person would consider inspecting a second time. I rested in this spot initially.” For a brief moment, she paused and inhaled deeply.
“Next I shifted locations frequently. Short-term inns. Off-the-books work. A space above a shut-down fishing store for a bit. An elderly lady in the neighboring district assumed I was avoiding an abusive guy and allowed me to wash clothes and stitch items to earn meals. I utilized an alternate given identity. I continuously held out for a period when things became secure.”
“Plus it completely failed to be?”
Her vision watered. “Each instance I assumed perhaps the coast was clear, I managed to spot Carl inside the city. Near a fuel pump. Inside a local department’s parking area. A single time right past Leon’s junior campus. He was ensuring I stayed aware.”
