“Get dressed.”
“Where are we going?”
“My house.”
I looked at him.
“You really think they’ll go in?”
“They told us they were going through my office.”
“They also know you’re alive now.”
Dad picked up his keys from the counter.
“People who already made one bad decision tend to make another when they panic.”
He was right.
By the time we reached his neighborhood, Vanessa’s SUV was parked beside the curb.
Grant’s truck sat behind it.
Dad told me to keep driving.
“Why?”
“Because I want to know what they do when they think I’m not here.”
We parked two blocks away.
Dad called the police non-emergency line.
He did not tell them his daughter was stealing from him.
He simply explained that people were attempting to enter his home after falsely reporting his death.
The dispatcher asked whether he believed anyone inside was armed.
Dad said he did not know.
Then we waited.
Seven minutes later, a patrol car turned onto the street without lights.
Dad and I walked back toward the house.
Vanessa was standing on the front porch arguing with a locksmith.
Grant was beside the garage.
A man with a clipboard stood near Dad’s truck.
The evaluator.
They really had invited someone to appraise it.
Vanessa saw Dad first.
The color drained from her face.
Grant turned next.
The clipboard man looked from Dad to the truck and slowly lowered his pen.
Dad stopped at the bottom of the walkway.
“Morning.”
Nobody answered.
The locksmith looked at Vanessa.
“You said the homeowner passed away.”
Dad raised his hand.
“Rumors of my death appear to be exaggerated.”
The police officers arrived behind us.
Vanessa immediately started crying.
Actual tears this time.
“Dad, please. We panicked.”
Dad looked at the locksmith.
“Did she show you proof that I was dead?”
“No, sir.”
“Proof she owned the house?”
“No.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Dad, we can explain.”
“You’ve been doing a lot of explaining today.”
Grant’s face hardened.
“This is a family matter.”
