“She told us she never had children before us. She said she’d been married.”
“She had a child. She decided not to raise her.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Then meet me.”
We chose a café halfway between our homes.
Hannah placed a photo album on the table.
She showed me pictures of Mom attending concerts, birthdays, and graduation ceremonies.
Then she turned to a photograph of Mom carrying boxes into Hannah’s college dorm.
“She stayed for three days,” Hannah said.
“My dad slept in his truck when he moved me into college because he couldn’t afford a motel.”
Hannah slowly closed the album.
