“She… she looked so soft, Mom!” Julian stammered, his bravado entirely evaporating. “She cooks! She wears dresses! How was I supposed to know?!”
“You weren’t supposed to know, because normal people don’t enter a marriage planning to physically ‘discipline’ their spouse!” I snapped, my voice dropping into a register of sheer, lethal authority.
I hit play on the voice memo application.
The pristine speakers of my laptop projected Julian’s whimpering, panicked voice into the room, echoing with terrifying clarity: “My mother said… she said a wife needs to be disciplined right away… she said if I didn’t break her spirit in the first week, she’d walk all over me… please stop, my elbow is breaking…!”
Eleanor stumbled back a step, as if she had been physically struck. The toxic, matriarchal script she had spent weeks feeding her son was suddenly exposed to the light, completely unvarnished and pathetically pathetic.
“You see, Eleanor,” I said, leaning back in my barstool, “I didn’t just record his confession of physical attempted assault. I recorded him explicitly implicating you in a conspiracy to commit domestic abuse and financial extortion.”
“That—that isn’t admissible!” Eleanor shrieked, her hands trembling as she grabbed the edge of the counter. “You recorded that under duress! I am a respected member of the community! My husband is a senior partner at a major law firm! We will ruin you!”
“Will you?” I asked gently. “Because I haven’t even told you about the second file on my screen.”
